in a Material World: Selections from the Winterthur Collection
Features approximately 50 outstanding objects from the superb collection of
the Winterthur Museum & Country Estate. Ranging in date from the 1700s to
1850, these works of art were selected for their remarkable beauty as well as
for the information they provide about material culture in the first decades
of the American republic.
Through June 1, 2008: Gallery 100 -- Missouri
Made Quilts, 1850-1940;
Featuring nine quilts made in Missouri, this beautiful exhibition complements
Quilts in a Material World: Selections from the Winterthur Collection. Missouri
Made Quilts focuses on work created from the mid-19th century through the first
revival of quilt making in the early 20th, and it shows the continuing influences
of technology.
Through June 6, 2008: Gallery 100 -- Stitch
in Time
The nine works on view in A Stitch in Time depict women who are engaged in various
facets of needlework, such as knitting, sewing, and embroidering. These artworks
from the Museum's collection demonstrate a pronounced interest in the production
of handmade crafts during the mid-19th century's rise of industrial manufacturing
in Europe and America.
